Reports - POS Tips Report

Written by Andy Hornbeak

The POS Tips report lists tips taken at the point of sale — the amount, the server who earned it, the register, and the batch it fell in. It is the report you use to work out what each person is owed at the end of a shift.

This article assumes you already know the basics of the Sharper reporting module — the Name, Token, Subtotal, column picker, and filter fields. For a full walkthrough of the reporting form itself, see the Sharper Reporting Reference Guide. This article only covers what's specific to the Tips report.

Why This Report Matters

Tips are other people's money, and getting them wrong is quickly noticed. Card tips in particular arrive with the takings rather than in the server's hand, so somebody has to work out who is owed what. Use this report to:

  • Total tips per server for a shift, a batch, or a pay period

  • Separate card tips, which need paying out, from cash tips already taken

  • Tie tips to a register batch so a shift can be closed out cleanly

  • Give payroll the tip figures it needs alongside hours worked

Server, Not User

This report uses Server columns rather than the User columns found on other point of sale reports — Server First Name, Server Last Name, Server Display Name, and Server Email. The server is the person credited with the tip, which is what you want when working out who to pay.

Note: Group on Server Display Name or Server Email rather than first and last name. Two people can share a name, and paying out tips against the wrong person is a hard mistake to unwind.

Tips Belong to a Batch

Each tip carries the register batch it was taken in — Batch ID, Batch Start Date, Batch Start Time and Batch End Time. That is what lets a tip total line up with a register close.

If tips are missing for a shift you know happened, check whether the register was ever closed out — an open batch will not reconcile cleanly, and the POS Z-Out report will show you whether the close-out step was completed. Tips taken outside the point of sale, such as a tip added to a marina invoice, do not appear here; those show as the Tip column on the CRM Invoices report.

Building a Tips Report

  1. Go to Reports → Point of Sale → Tips in the left sidebar.

  2. If a shipped report is close to what you need, use the ⋯ menu → Copy first — shipped reports can only be edited by the Sharper team.

  3. Otherwise click + New and give it a Name, such as "Tips by Server."

  4. Add the columns below from the Available panel.

  5. Set Subtotal to Amount.

  6. Turn on Summarize Report if you want per-server totals rather than every individual tip.

  7. Click Save, then Get Report to set a date range and run it.

Available Columns

Field

What It Shows

Amount

The tip — the column to subtotal

Server Display Name, Server Email

Who earned it. Group on these.

Payment Type, Payment Method

How the tip was paid. This is what separates card tips needing payout from cash already taken.

Register Name

Which register the tip was taken on

Batch ID, Batch Start Date, Batch Start Time, Batch End Time

The register batch — use Batch ID to reconcile a single shift

Invoice, Invoice Date, Invoice Status

The invoice the tip was added to. Check the status before paying out on an unpaid or voided one.

Customer Name, Cust Email

Who left the tip, where the sale was attached to an account

Cust Type, Cust Active

Customer classification and account status

Useful Filters

  • Tips owed for a shift: Field Batch ID, set to the batch, grouped by Server Display Name, subtotalled on Amount.

  • Card tips needing payout: Field Payment Type, set to your card type.

  • A pay period's tips: Field Batch Start Date, operator Between, covering the period, grouped by server.

  • One server's tips: Field Server Email, set to the person.

  • Tips on unpaid invoices: Field Invoice Status, set to an unpaid status — worth checking before paying anything out.

  • One register: Field Register Name, set to the register.

A saved report grouped by Server Display Name and filtered by Batch ID is the practical end-of-shift tool — one figure per person, tied to a register close that can be checked.
