How to Set Up Electric Meter Billing

SharperMMS tracks electricity consumption at marina slips and campground hookup sites and automatically calculates billing charges based on meter readings. This guide covers the complete setup process — from creating billing products in POS through recording your first readings.

How Meter Billing Works

When a meter reading is recorded, the system calculates the charge by multiplying the units consumed (current reading minus previous reading) by the unit price of the billing product assigned to that meter. Invoices can be generated automatically for all readings in a batch.

Setup requires four things, completed in this order:

  1. A billing product in POS — sets the rate charged per unit of electricity

  2. Power Meter Types — defines service categories (30A, 50A, etc.)

  3. Power Meter records — links each physical pedestal or hookup to a slip or site

  4. Meter Readings — records consumption and generates invoices on a regular basis

Marina and Campground: The setup process is identical for both modules. Follow the steps below and open the linked article for the module that applies to your property.

Step 1 — Create a Billing Product in POS

Each meter must be linked to a POS product that defines the rate charged per unit consumed. The product's unit price is the rate applied — for example, if electricity costs $0.12 per kWh, set the product price to $0.12. Create a separate product for each service level you offer (e.g., Electric – 30A and Electric – 50A).

See POS - Products for instructions on creating a product. When setting up the product, pay attention to the following fields:

Field

What to set

Price

Your rate per unit of electricity (e.g., $0.12 per kWh). This is the rate the system will multiply by the units consumed.

Product Type

Non-Inventory or Service are both appropriate for electrical billing.

Tax Code

Select the tax code that applies to utility charges at your property.

Income Account

Select the income account for utility revenue.

Step 2 — Create Power Meter Types

Power meter types define the electrical service categories at your property — for example, 30 Amp and 50 Amp. They are used to classify individual meters and to filter meter readings by service level.

Step 3 — Create Power Meters

A power meter record links a physical electrical pedestal or hookup to a specific slip or site and the billing product you created in Step 1. Create one meter record for each physical pedestal. If a slip or site has both 30A and 50A hookups, create a separate meter record for each.

Wild Energy Integration — Sharper Support Required

If your property uses Wild Energy smart meters, the Wild Energy Meter Number field on each meter record must be configured by the Sharper Support team. This field is not visible to standard staff accounts.

Step 4 — Record Meter Readings

Once your meters are configured, staff can begin recording readings using the Meter Read Batch. Readings are entered by Space Group, and the system automatically calculates charges and can generate invoices on save.
