An address verification system (AVS) is an essential tool utilized by credit card companies to ensure that a customer is the legitimate cardholder, thereby helping to prevent fraudulent transactions.
How it works
When a customer initiates a purchase, the merchant requests authorization for the transaction, and the customer provides their billing address. The AVS then compares the customer's address with the address on record for the card. If the addresses align, the transaction is likely to be authorized. Conversely, if there is a discrepancy, the transaction may be declined.
What it checks
The AVS primarily verifies the numeric components of the address, including the building number and zip code.
Who offers it
AVS services are provided by major credit card companies such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover, and are available in various countries, including the United States.
How long it takes
This is seamless for the customer and remains invisible to the customer.
How to avoid errors
When attempting to verify a PO Box address, it is advisable to enter the box number first. For instance, you can input "PO Box 1234" as "1234 PO Box."
If you are saving a new payment method and receive an error during the validation, please confirm the customer’s address.
